invalid ms-dos function

i keep getting a strange error when trying to copy largish files from my cd to my hd . It comes up with the error "cannot copy asd.mpg invalid msdos function"
my system is amd duron 800
nvidia geforce 2 mx 100/200
256 mb sdram
jetway kt motherboard (via chipset)
I have tried everything to copy files across they will run from the cd but won`t copy to hd i have at least 20 gig free space on hd .

or copy *.* and creating a directory first on hard drive to copy to

md

copy d:xxx c:xxx example of proper use of copy command from cd to hard drive
