I need to upgrade my BIOS and MSI (maker of the motherboard in my machine) says to do so in DOS. So I made the MS-DOS floppy disk and rebooted, got into DOS, got the A: prompt but can't get the C: prompt. When I try it replies "Invalid Disk Specification". Please help me. I have no idea what to do next and I've read a bunch of stuff on the internet from people who get this message but I haven't seen anything about someone with this exact problem.

Can you better describe your mb? There must be a better way to upgrade.

Sure my motherboard is made by MSI. Model is KT4V. I've been told MS-6712 is the part number but after looking at MSI's website it looks like there is more than one called MS-6712 ie KT4V-L etc. I hope that helps some.

Look between the second and third pci slots. There should be the model and version numbers. MSI has a suite of programs to make flashing as they put it safer. No flash is safe. An update is usally to fix a coding error that was discovered after the bios version was released. Be 100% sure you really need to do this. If you fluff it, that nice motherboard will make an interesting center piece on the coffee table or a good door prop.

I may be crazy, but I'm not stupid...

Had the same motherboard, but that is not the problem. The DOS disk will not see Drive C, because XP uses NTFS by default. You will need to copy the flash program and bios files to the boot disk, before you shut down XP, and boot from the disk.

Thanks a million for all the replies. To help me clarify...on the MS-DOS boot disk I have, I should copy the .exe file that updates my BIOS? MSI's website was pretty adamant about not doing this from a floppy. Why is that? And how do I back up my current BIOS?

MSI has a very good point.

A HD is more reliable than a floppy; by orders of magnitue.

But, with only NTFS, you're stuck with using floppy, because NT/2k/XP will not allow "direct access to hardware."

Make sure you have a solid floppy.

Do an unconditional format. Run chkdsk. Avoid thunderstorms. Make sure your cat or kid doesn't mess with the plug strip.

If the flash does not complete cleanly, it won't boot and you're sunk.

OMG I want to throw my machine off of a cliff! I put the flash program on the floppy, went into DOS, and executed the file. It brought me to "FLASH EPROM Programming Utility". There was a message that said,"Please press [Enter] key to start if you really need to update BIOS." When I hit enter though it said "File does not exist". What did I do wrong? I put the .exe file and the .1CO file on the floppy. These were the only two files that were extracted from the .zip file I downloaded from the MSI website. (other than a .txt and a .doc file). Here is some other info that was displayed in the Flash EPROM Programming Utility. I don't know if this will help but I thought I'd put it in here just in case. Rom File Name - Unknown. Rom Size - 256 kb. Boot Block - 16kb. NVRAM - 8kb. Voltage - -5v. Thanks a bunch for helping me out.

You better read the docs because you'll probably only get one shot.

There MAY be syntax help in the EXE.

If the flash utility is called flash.exe

flash /?

may tell you something.
