Reply: Even if you could connet a 1394 Firewire interface to the internet, you still wouldn't get 400 Mbps. You are still dependant on the speed your ISP sends you data. No ISP I know of offer a 400 Mbs service. The fastest I have seen is 2 Mbs and most broadband modems will only handle a maximum of 8Mbs. Even with a 100Mbs Ethernet connection, you are still only going to get the Internet at a maximum of 2Mbs, often only 512 kbs. Stuart

Reply: Oops, think you slightly mis-read this one Stuart, babbage00 simply wants to network PC's together over 1394, no, mention of internet. 1394 networking is possible but rather impractical because the generally accepted maximum cable length for 1394 (without repeaters) is a pitiful 15 feet! Also you would need third party software to achieve it (not free!) Google for "firewire networking" to find out more.

Reply: ok no need to fight guys, you were both right. The title indicated i wanted to surf the web using firewire, which was true, but the message said i wanted to connect to the network using firewire, so also correct. The post was misleading so I'll take the blame for this one. I was hoping to increase my connection speed using the firewire connection because i read in another post that someone bridged their connection on their laptop and had the 400mbps speed. And I was just hoping to get some input on the practicality of doing that. Also, i am using wireless 802.11g dlink router and adapter for my pc, but the network drops all the time. It's very discouraging, any ideas? SOK

Reply: You may well get 400 Mbs over your local network, but when it come to the Internet, your connection speed is what your ISP gives you. A friend recently that was having problems with a wireless network continually dropping out. Always worked while I was there but failed as soon as my back was turned. Eventually traced the problem to the shredder. Every time anyone used the shredder, it interfered with the wireless network. Moved the shredder away from the WAP and put it on a different power circuit and everything worked fine thereafter. Stuart
