Hello all,

For the past several months, I have been experiencing problems with my internet connection. Everything will work fine for a while, and then (arbitrarily) a website will not load. I will get a "this page cannot be displayed" message, and I also regularly get booted off of MSN Messenger. Sending and receiving email rarely occurs without "time out" errors, etc. Sometimes I get a warning in my system tray about my LAN connection having limited or no connectivity. Oddly, the message will sometimes identify the problem as being with LAN connection 2, 3, 4, or 5, and we only have one. The other strange thing is that there seems to be no rhyme or reason to all this happening. My ISP is Rogers (high speed cable), and I have spoken to them several times to try to solve this problem, but to no avail. Apparently our modem is working fine, but we are getting anywhere from 25% to 50% data loss, as demonstrated by tests run by Rogers tech support. Rogers' latest suggestion to me was to buy a new network card, which I have done, but I thought I would wait to see if anyone on this forum had any suggestions before installing it.

If you can help me, I will be eternally grateful!

Thank you :)

Amanda

I should mention that we used to have our computer hooked up through a router (as we previously had it networked with another computer), but now it's directly attached to the modem. In other words, we no longer have a "network" at all. Could this be part of the problem?

Well to test the network card. You should perform the loop back test.

Click Start/Run and type CMD in the window and click "ok".

then type the following:

ping 127.0.0.1

hit enter.

If you get no packet loss the the network card should be good. If you do get packet loss then replace the card.

Aside from that. Packet loss could mean a bad ethernet cable, or you may have to rerun the internet connection wizard.

To do this. Click on Start/Control Panel/ "switch to classic view"/ double click "internet options" icon/ Connections tab/ click the "Setup" button at the top right of the box, and go through the wizard.

Once finished, reboot the computer. That should take care of it for you.

Good Luck.

Hi there,

Thanks for the advice. I ran the test and got no packet loss, but I DO get packet loss when I ping the IP of an external website (e.g. Yahoo). What could this mean?

May want to replace the ethernet cable going from your PC to the Modem.
