Check that your settings on the internet browser are correct. On IE the tools, internet options, connections tab needs to be looked at. Also try the IP address returned by the ping to web site such as yahoo. If so then check the dns server settings of the network card. If worse comes to worse and you can get a ip address to work then consider getting a hosts file. Add one line for each of the 20 or so places you visit often and leave it like that. It would be much more secure. Just put in a web search to get to any other site. DNS lets bad places get found as well as good places. No need for the bad now is there?
I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you goober.

If it is new probably the easiest way is to run the internet connection wizard.

This is a common occurance within security tab in internet options... there is no picked setting so there is a cannot display message.
click on each icon and choose default or custom for each one and then save and exit...
some security programs try to use higher security than is really needed...I would just use the "default " setting
