Comment:

when I go to:

TOOLS > INTERNET OPTIONS

a dialogue box pops up and it has these tabs.

However,A couple of days ago...I noticed that my 'GENERAL TAB' dissapeared and my home page was changed.

With no 'GENERAL TAB,' I can't change my home page and I can't delete the 'TEMP INTERNET FILES'.

What can I do to fix this problem and get the 'GENERAL TAB' back?

Please respond...I don't want to start all over again and I am a newb and I'll probably have trouble with that too.

Thank you.

This works on task manager when the tabs disappear. I wonder if it will work here. Try it and let me know.
Double click the top area of the internet options box. Doing this should restore the tabs.
Additionally, double clicking the area next to tabs will have the opposite effect.

Your browser has been hijacked by crappy third party s/ware. Download either AD-AWARE or SPYBOT SEARCH AND DESTROY to rid yourself of it.

This will stop webrowser hijacking.
Click on Start/Run and type: regedit and click OK.
Navigate to:
HKEY_USER > .DEFAULT > software > policies > microsoft > internet explorer. Right click on internet explorer key and choose " New key", name it control panel. Right click on control panel, choose new DWORD value, name this "homepage". Right click on "homepage" and choose modify and type in the number 1.
This should lock your homepage so no other site can change it.

Now navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\internet explorer\main and look for the start page entry. Check that it is the one u want it to be.

I did what you said [DAVE02] and unfortunately that didn't work either.

Those tabs still don't come out and it told me when I renamed the that stuff, that those names already existed or something like that.

I REALLY appreciate your help and if you have any more ideas...I"ll try them.

DAVE02:

What if I delete the default icon that was in the INTERNET EXPLORER folder?

Would that help or harm my computer?

Does anyone know for sure?

I just need answers.

Thank you.

Dave02 had the right idea.. I had the same problem.

Navigate to:
HKEY_USER > .DEFAULT > software > policies > microsoft > internet explorer > control panel. Double click each entry and change the value from 1 to 0. Your tabs should come back. (I just figured this out 2 mins before writing this post) Thanks Dave!

Do a find for GeneralTab under the HKEY_USERS key. You should find it under something close to "HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-166745521-3000887322-1647371527-1006\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel]" Once you find the key change the DWORD to "0".

I had the same issue with the internet option under tools changed and no tabs at all. I figured out how to fix it. Below is a step by step procedure to fix the issue :)

PROBLEM: Internet Options under Tools on IE is changed and the General Tab is no longer present. To repair this issue you must fix a data value in te registry. To do this do the following.
START > RUN type in regedit >
On the left side there go to the following... Click on HKEY_CURRENT_USER then click on Software then click on Policies then click on Microsoft Then click on Internet Explorer and then click Control Panel.

You will see three entries in this area, they are.....(default) REG_SZ & Programs Tab_REG-DWRORD & General Tab REG-DWORD. To the right of these there is a section with #'s in it referred to as "Data". The Data associated with the General Tab should read 0x00000000 (0)... if that data has a 1(one) instead of a 0 (zero) you need to change that data value back to 0 (zero). To do that do this..... right click on General Tab.........click modify.... make sure here is a dot in Hexadecimal selecting it....and the number to the left under (Value Data) change that number to a 0 (zero). Close the registry edit. After you do this the Internet Option under Tools will be normal again. :)
