Internet Explorer won't open on desktop

November 7, 2010 at 11:23:29
Specs: Windows XP, Pentium (4) 2.66 GHz/768 RAM

I click on the icon and it won't appear on the desktop. I hit the keys control-alt-delete because I have to use the task manager to turn Internet Explorer off. Mozilla Firefox works normally.I have redownloaded Internet Explorer 8 several times and that does not fix the problem.

Are you saying that after you have IE running you can't click on the red X in the top right corner to close IE? If so, then you have additional issues besides a bad shortcut icon.

No - what I mean is I can't get a page to appear at all on the desktop screen. And when it's open - I can't right click to close it on the tool bar at the bottom of the screen so I have to open the Task Manager to quit the program.

uninstall IE8 and it will revert back to IE7. Then make sure IE8 does not load up again in your updates. IE8 is too crammed full of security for some XP PC's.

Some HELP in posting on plus free progs and instructions Cheers

Why don't you close IE by clicking on the red X?

I found the solution from although I had to look for quite a while. the problem is that the IE window opened off screen - so I opened it then pressed alt + shift key then M (move) and was able to find the IE page with the mouse and drag it back into view

It sounds like you have a Multi-Monitor display setup?

No - actually just one monitor. I took your suggestion and uninstalled IE 8 and leaving the earlier version on. See how it goes.
