I am running Windows XP Media Center Edition on my 1.6ghz laptop. I used Internet Explorer for about 5 days after I got it, switched to Firefox, and now I am using Opera because I HATE INet Explorer. When I open my Task Manager 2 or 3 instances of IEXPLORE.exe are open and I am getting internet explorer popups that begin with 'CiD.' occasionally. I am scanned my entire drive with Spybot S&D and I just bought Norton 2008 and did a full system scan. The moment i boot up my computer there are 2 instances of IEXPLORE open. I try to end task on them and they close, but immediately reopen and are using about 30-55 mbRam each. What can/should I do?

I've had this before and it was a file called SVCHOST32 causing the problem.
Boot the computer into safe mode, ditch Norton (because it is crap) and download tools like AVG, Spybot Search and Destroy and scan your system with them. Search using Windows Search tool for a file called SVCHOST32 and delete it.

Also, you can disable Internet Explorer by going to the Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs. Then click the large 'Add/Remove Windows Components' button in that window. Scan for Internet Explorer, deselect it and click 'Next'.

that won't stop it from running, it just hides the icons. You can just as easily type "iexplore" into Run.

I have no file called svchost32, and I tried that IE trick and it didnt work either. After my computer has been up awhile each instance of IE uses very little memory.
