Recently my interent explorer has been opening very slow. If I open it while not connected to the internet it opens as it normally did. Is there amything I can do to fix this problem??

It sounds like it's trying to connect to some web site and is not able to do that quickly. Usually it would try to connect to your default "home page".
Go to TOOLS menu, Internet Options, and set your homepage to blank and see if that helps.
Another thing I noticed that sites like YAHOO push this "toolbar" on you and it tries to retrieve the buttons every time you go online. That may slow it down as well.

How about other programs--do you see any apparent sluggishness there? Was this slowness sudden or did has it been more gradual. Did you defragment your drive? Did you check for little junky programs that open up when you boot--like those in the "start up" folder, or in the registry? Those usually show up near the clock on the taskbar--they can eat a lot of memory and slow everything down. Get rid of any uneeded ones.
I noticed on my computer that if I have too many windows/apps running, POPUPS can take a while to pop up. Pretty annoying...

It happened suddenly it wasnt gradual. Yeah I defragmented and emptied all uneeded files(cookies temp int file). I also scanned it for viruses. An I have the same prorams in my start up that Ive always had. Norton, weather bug and instant messenger.

Did you press alt-ctrl-del to see what programs are actually running on the machine? Is it possible your HD is developing a problem somewhere and it has trouble reading all the necessary files needed to load IE? Does anyone else use your computer--could they have installed something you don't know about? Are you online with a dial-up modem?

I am the only user and there arent any new programs installed. I am using a dial up modem but a it always opened right when I click it but recently it takes 20 secs or so. My connection speed is the same as its always been. But its odd beacuase when im not connected and I open ie, it opens right away like it use to but as soon as I am connected it takes forever.

Well that's what's strange about it. It just sounds like it's trying to detect the net connection, or connect to something. One thing you can do is to monitor the network flow using a program like DU meter from www.hageltech.com or the network monitoring in XP, and see if when you open up IE, it's sending out data and communicating. I know that some websites you go to have a nasty habit of trying to add some "addons" to your browser, like search functions or toolbars, and then it will try to connect to them to retrieve something. Do you see the little flag waving on the top right as you open it? That shows it's trying to reach something.

when i open ie in blank the flag isnt moving. I also downloaded du meter and when i open ie it doesnt show any activity just upload from opening the ie.

go to windowsxpAtoZ website - you will see you should not download a lot of extras because the solution is in your settings somewhere. Also, I think the virus last week affected the server in some areas, like mine because I checked.

Yeah its been happeneing ever since that virus went out but it still is opening slow. Is that the problem possibly and will it ever correct itself?

It just makes no sense. It's like it's trying to detect if there is a network connection or not. Yeah, a lot of servers had a virus problem, but unless you have a bad network connection from your ISP...
Do you see the HD light blinking for those 20 seconds, or does the IE window show up immediately, but it's unuseable for the 20 seconds while it does something?

Panda antivirus caused IE to open slowly.. The connection was fine.. IE was slow. The window drew slow.. the page loaded slow.. slow!
The fix was to remove dll's from... something or other i forgot. Point is.. got any new software? Accept any plugins? TekWiz mentioned this already.
If this problem only started when slammer was released.. It might be that or it might have something to do with the worldnet problem that popped up the day before. Entire sections of the web were down.. some were super slow.. some are still slow.
Contact your isp.. ask them if your connection is slow because of some problem on there end. If not.. then you can start troubleshooting. If it is there problem.. wait it out.
