I cannot seem to change my IE homepage. Or more accurately, it changes back as soon as I change it.

If I go through either IE or the Control Panel/Internet Options and hit "Use Blank", "Use Current" or put in any other page and hit 'apply' or 'OK', nothing is apparently wrong, however, if I immediately reopen the settings, the home page is back to where it was.

I've run Hijackthis, checked off the boxes for the HKCU and KKLM for the IE start page, and it fixes the problem, but if I immediately scan again, it will be right back. Any ideas on what this can be?

The home page it gives me is: http://us4.hpwis.com/

And I am then redirected to http://hp-desktop.aol.com/

Thank you.

If all else fails, start up regedit. Do a search for 'hpwis' and delete all references.

Thanks for the quick responses. I tried both cwshredder and HJT with no luck.

CWShredder reports that cool web search was not found on the system.

Hijackthis appears to fix the problem, but as soon as I scan again, its right back there.

Mattie - My thoughts too - pay that much for a computer, and HP doesn't let me use it. I do most of my work on Netscape, but I keep IE for windows updates, so I'm trying to set that as the homepage.

FYI

HJT only generate a log indicating what's running both good & bad under your XP hood. You should post the HJT log in our Security & Virus Forum and pray that our HJT Log Wizard is around.

Mattie - thanks for the tips on the windows updates.

XpUser - This is my first experience with HJT, but I believed that checking the box and hitting "fix checked" would or should fix it. It did remove a BHO that I had checked, just not the start page. Incidentally, I also pasted my log into an automated Hijackthis log reader online that I had found through computing.net (but can't seem to find now) and everything came up as safe. Do you still recommend posting to the security forum?

Ham - I was able to change the hpwis in the registry in a number of places, but I got an error everytime I tried changing it in values for "Start Page" (the error was "Cannot edit start page: Error writing the value's new contents").

Thanks again.

The automatic HJT Analyzer does not assure absolute guarantee that it will fix everything. Only expert guidance & help from someone such as our HJT czar usually solve the problem. If the problem still persists even after everything you've tried, then I do recommend your poisting it. I am no HJT expert which is why I hope our HJT Wizard will take over.

I'm not sure what happened to the thread with my HJT log - I apologize if I violated any forum policies.

I tried the XPY program. It was very useful, but the lock home page feature there still couldn't block whatever is changing the homepage on my computer. I also deleted the HJT lines that were suggested with no luck. Any other suggestions?

Thanks again.

You didn't violated any of CN Rules. I suggested you post it there. CN delete posts arbitrarily. Sorry about that.

Did you get to see My answer?

In Spybot under tools/ie tweaks uncheck
the boxes or remove the 06 lines in
hijackthis.

Xp - No problem. Glad I didn't offend any administrator.

Abnormal - Yes - I did both. A new highjackthis scan didn't not show the 06 entries, but the home page problem persists.

want some really good advise?

nuke the disc ... fdisk, clean installation (no system recovery) ... 2 hours tops.

this is going on here now for how long? :-)

it's ridiculous what some manufacturers do, you buy a computer off the shelf, turn it on and your first impression is: 'omg, this system tray really needs 1600x1200 to leave some space for the taskbar (quicklaunch off, that is :-)', worse than the odd spyware attack!

Today's subliminal thought is: 'Calm down ... it's only ones and zeros.'

Correcting the above - I didn't mean the double negative...a new scan does not have the 06 entries.

If you still want to post this on the Security & Virus forum then just state the problem and say that you have an HJT log. If someone on there asks you to do so then it won't get zapped.

Although XPUser said that you should post a log on S&V, there is no cross link between forums, so the moderator will not realise someone here asked you to submit it (unless you spell it out).

I find it hard to imagine how the webmaster could possibly arrange cross linking of that sort.

In general I don't agree that "CN delete posts arbitrarily".

Actually JW does not delete abitrarily, if you read the posting rules it clearly states multi posting is not warranted or needed...

I qutoe from: http://www.computing.net/forums/rules.html

"If you forgot a piece of information when you posted your question, post a reply on your original thread. Do not post a whole new thread containing the additional information. These threads with additional information will be removed, hence damaging your ability to receive help.

Do not allow your posts to "creep." In other words, any and all followups, such as answers to requests for additional information or the results of recommendations followed, to your original post should be addressed in that original post. This can be accomplished by using the reply form located at the bottom of each and every post. If you enter this followup information by creating a whole new posting on the site, that new posting will most likely be deleted."

IE7, If you have the latest version of Zone Alarm installed there are many others having similar Homepage problems. Uninstalling it and going back to the previous version of Zone Alarm has corrected the Homepage problem for many.

Thanks, Tufenuf, that did it. I uninstalled, reset the home page to 'blank' and then reinstalled the same version of ZA, figuring I would then have something to prevent a malicious program from changing it again, but now it functions normally instead.

When the problem started, I had searched through ZA looking for some kind of option that blocked changing the home page but couldn't find it. Did I miss something, or is this just a ZA bug?

Thanks to all for the help.
