Internet Explorer freezes w/ pop up

Upon opening IE, things seem fine until 1 of 2 things happen-- either a pop up window pops up, or I hit "control N" for a new window. Either way, IE freezes and the only way out is to end the task, which closes all windows. THe only thing I"ve done lately is run my spy bot software, download a few efax files, and install new updates from windows. What's causing this freezing and how can I fix it (besides paying microsoft lots of money to help me) ??
