Comment:

I keep getting an error message on internet explorer randomly when i am browsing it says: "internet explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. Sorry for the inconvenience".

The error report reads:
Appname: iexplorer.exe
AppVer: 6.0.2900.2149
ModName: msvcrt.dll
ModVer: 7.0.2600.214
Offset: 00030ac4

I've tried to manually replace the msvcrt.dll in C:\WINDOWS\Systems32 but it wont let me.

Help!

You could try a repair of IE, viz :-

Start, Run and type in "sfc /scannow" (not the quotes but the space) and have your WinXP CD ready to put in the drive. If the main Windows set-up screen appears and covers the progress bar, just close it. If SFC doesn't work, the RPC locator service needs to be started in Start, Admin Tools, Services.

A mininum of 4 registry entries (SourcePath and ServicePackSourcePath) contain pointers to where the files are. They are either in a hard drive folder (i386), on an optical drive or possibly both. Problems can arise when drive letters have been changed after the initial install, e.g. adding a new drive or implementing a dual-boot system will not update the registry pointers to the i386 folder. It's worth reading this http://forums.techguy.org/showthread.php?t=114436&page=1&pp=15 particularly if you only have a recovery CD
