When I go on certain websites the page starts loading, then this message appears saying internet explorer has caused an error and needs to be closed down (the one with the send and don't send error report buttons). It used to happen occassionaly with no consistency to it, however now it is getting worse. Sites like google and the bbc I can view without problems, but many links from google results don't. The current one I use for testing is a forum about the NTL speed increase. (First result from google search 'ntl free upgrade 1 2`). These sites all work fine on my dad's machine, so it must be down to my pc.

The ModName file shown in this error is usually ntdll.dll, or sometimes wininet.dll. I have replaced both of these files with ones from a working machine to no avail (SFC didn't help either)

If I use safe mode with networking I can view these sites with no problem, so it must be software related. I have tried disabling everything in msconfig (startup and services) to no avail. I also tried the diagnostic startup option, but that stopped the internet working altogether. Finally I tried making a new account in Windows, and the same problem occurrs in that.

Any ideas how to stop this error?

I tried a lot of things mentioned in there, still no luck. The ntdll.dll file must be ok surely, as it works in safe mode. This is getting really annoying now, as it happens on sites from that google link you gave me too.
