My problem concerns Internet Explorer 6 running on Windows XP Home Edition. When I press Page Up (or Page Down) the screen scrolls by an amount which is more than a single page, it’s about a page and a half. Exactly the same happens when I click in the vertical scroll bar. This only happens in IE – page up/down work perfectly in all other applications (Word, Excel, etc.)

This is really irritating. Any suggestions?

Try TOOLS, INTERNET OPTIONS, ADVANCED tab. Scroll down and check box "use smooth scrolling."

Click OKs on the way out.

Solarian,

Thanks for your response.

However, smooth scrolling is set already. And I have also tried without smooth scrolling. There is no difference to the problem.

Folks,

I've got the same problem.

Smooth scroll was already activated for me, as well.

All other programs work well.

Could this be some kind of virus, or just a bug?

I had the same problem as well. If I clicked in the scroll bar just below the thumb button, it would scroll down a page. But if I clicked further down from the thumb button, it scrolled two pages. I had recently done a Windows Update which included a security upgrade for IE. I removed the update and it fixed the problem.

Apparently they broke their scrollbar logic with a security update :-(

Same thing on XP Pro - what seems to happen is that if you click and hold in the scrollbar region, the slider moves to that location.

Which would be handy if there was a delay to allow you juts to click for up or down.

I find my page up/page down keys work OK.

Do a file search for mshtml.dll and find the file that has version 6.0.2800.1106. It should be in a service pack file such as C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386.

Copy this file to your C:\windows\System32 directory and overwrite the file that is there.

Problem should be fixed. It worked for me.

mshtml.dll is the culprit, but you can revert to a more recent version. Version 6.0.2800.1264 is OK. This was included in the "October 2003 Cumulative Patch for IE6 SP1".

You're right, ctwist!

The most recent version that I had prior to 1276 (the culprit) was 1106.

Everyone should be mindful that once this fix is done, WindowsUpdate will try to reinstall 1276 (KB824125) as a critical update. Avoid it until MS gets around to addressing this annoyance.

Thanks for your input.

I have Windows ME and have the same scroll problem. When I search for mshtml.dll, the only one found is already in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM: MSHTML.DLL, version 6.0.2800.1276, created on October 16, 2003, by an automatic update: Security Update for Microsoft Windows ME (KB828026). What can I do--aside await Microsoft fix?

Try using the Microsucks workaround: Set IE to High Security instead of Medium in the Tools\Internet Options Menu. This will do radical things like kill all Java (Hurrah!), etc. In other words it will actually avoid all that useless junk on the web that you never needed but may have become used to.
Or better yet Reinstall DOS or try out Linux. <evil grin>
