Ok so I use a wireless router connected to comcast high speed cable. My problem is that the router always disconnects from the net a few minutes in when i use my bit torrent provider. It has never done this in any other living arrangement i have been at. I have reset the router several times and notice that everytime it seems very hot. Is it overheating, or is the ISP booting me because the whole P2P thing?

Simple .... remove the router & see if you still get disconnected. If you do not, then it is not the ISP. Although, doing so might not be the best thing to do if you are sharing data that could be reported to your ISP.

Well, first I would check to make sure if you're kicked off the net, or just your bit torrent.
If you're kicked off, then it very well may be your router. A number of them have problems with the number of connections BT will use.
If you can still do other stuff online, then it's probably Comcast.
EDIT: It's also possible you've simply hit your maximum half-open connections in XP. If a site partially comes up, or it'll come at least partially up if you refresh a few times, then that's the problem.

What about the firewall that is usually built in the router, did you allow access to those ports? I know that it's pretty dumb question to ask....but some people don't know.

If he did give access to the ports then it would only macs out his bandwidth and slow down http. If he didn't then his bt would be slower.
What happens if you set the port number to something around 60000 and enable encryption?
I no people who say that comcast don't like bt.

Ok sorry i haven't responded in so long but there is a company comcast pays that blocks out internet traffic directly related to p2p. My router and my modem are one in the same. It is a wireless netgear router that comcast configures for us. I tried to have access codes to modify the settings and they wont give them to me!
