Hello,
I have been experiencing an annoying problem with my internet connection. Evertime I go to startup a program that connects to the internet it takes an unusually long time for the program to start or get a connection...programs that used to come up instantly now take 10-20mins or even longer to start up.
For example, when I start internet explorer it says 'detecting proxy settings' for about 5-10mins before my home page comes up, but then everything works fine. Likewise, when I go to check my email outlook takes about 10mins to send/receive mail whereas it used to take about 10seconds.
Similar problems occur with every single program that requires an internet connection. Any advice on what might be causing this problem would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Virus?
Trojan?
Spyware?
Any/all of the above can cause problems.
Have you run a virusscan?
Do you have Adaware and Spybot S & D ?
Have you done basic system maintenance such as defrag, delete temp internet files, chkdisk, disk cleanup?
How long has the problem been happening? Did you instal any new hardware/software recently? Do you have any yellow ?marks in devicemanager?

Hi Richard,
Yes, I have run a virusscan and AdAware. Neither found any problems.
I have also done a chkdsk and disk cleanup, and I clean out my temp internet files regularly. I don't see any yellow ?'s in device manager.
This has been happening for several weeks now, I have not installed any new hardware/software recently.

One thing i am sure would help is doubling the amount of RAM you have. XP uses all of 128mb just to run its own processes without starting up other programs. Adding more ram should speed things up a lot. That alone would probably not account for delays of 10-15 minutes. I would also try a system restore to a time before the problem developed.

Thanks for your advice.
I unfortunately can't do a system restore since my oldest restore point is after this problem started.
And I know that 128MB is low for XP, but I don't think my RAM is related to this problem as it only happens with certain programs (and I have been using XP for over 2years with no major problems before this).

Try running system file checker.
Put the XP CD into your CDROM and close it out if it auto launches.
Then click on Start/Run/ and type the following:sfc /scannow
click ok.

I'm almost out of ideas but just to shed further light on the problem for our more learned colleagues, are you using dialup or cable connection? Does the problem manifest only when you are trying to establish a new connection? Or if you are already running something like IE and then try to start up your email client do you get a delay? Have you tried spybot search and destroy? it sometimes finds things adaware may miss. Only other thing I can think of would be to uninstal and reinstal your modem. Probably won't help but anything is worth a try.
In your original post you mention 'detecting proxy settings'
Are you using a proxy server? Do you connect directly to internet or are you on a network and connecting through a server? If so the problem might be with network settings and not your system.

Have you changed Internet providers recently just before this started occuring? Are you by any chance on a home network where you go through a router to a cable modem to connect? I'm assuming you must be because of what you said. If so, I'm just wondering if there may be some technical issues there that you perhaps would have to contact your provider about. I'm not sure, but I'm thinking it could be several possible issues relating to that......
*A weakened signal from the router causing a slow down and delay in your Internet access speed? That could happen for different reasons. A router going bad for example where you would have to buy a new one, which is not a likely scenario though or you may be having problems with the strength of signal lately that the ISP has been providing through the cable modem(assuming you are on cable internet there) I've had problems with our cable internet provider here not providing a strong enough signal through our router thus causing the connection to go out from time to time because we're only paying for the one computer in the household access policy of theirs.
*You could be having problems with the internet service and the quality of the connection in your area.
*There could perhaps be issues for some reason with there being a delay in the router recognizing your computers IP address(Again that is assuming you're using a high speed service where you're on a home network and have a NIC(Network Interface Card) in your computer) You would perhaps have to refresh your IP address in the routers database or reconnect the router so it will get resynchronized just like rebooting a computer to refresh it from time to time. You might need to consult the router manual. If you're on a home network with more than one computer having an internet connection, check to see if you have the same problem on any other computers or if it only happens on that one computer.
Basically, I'm just speculating that it's a network problem relating to your setup in your home or a problem with your ISP.

Hi,
Ok, I downloaded and ran Spybot...it did find some things that adaware missed, but nothing related to this problem.
I am using a cable connection. I have not changed providers recently. I do not have a home network or proxy server. I don't think that this is an issue with my service provider since I still had the exact same problem when I hooked up my computer to another provider at my parents' house.
This problem manifests everytime I open an internet-related application. So even if I am alreay running IE, I still get a delay if I open a program like outlook or icq. And, even if I have already established a connection in a program, if I shut down that program and start it up again I still get a delay again. (IE, however, seems to be an exception to this last point...once I get past the initial "detecting proxy settings" I can close and open it again without any delays - although, I have noticed that if explorer.exe is restarted then the delay recurs.)
