Hello, any direction is appreciated.
I was able to connect to the internet until 3 weeks ago & can't figure out how to get it to work again.
My husband & I each have a computer, his runs Windows 98, mine runs Windows XP. One day, my AOL 9.v connection switched itself from dial up to broadband & I couldn't change that back in it's settings, because in the settings, the program tries to get you phone numbers to use & of course, it can't get online, I guess because the broadband is using the phone cord like a cable or something.... I don't know....
The bogus broadband setting had taken control of the line whether the PC was on or off & you would get a busy signal if you called our home, unless I unplugged the cord from the modem.
I tried to access the online using an earlier AOL8 dial up version to bypass the now AOL 9v broadband. It would try & then tell me that it couldn't detect a dial tone after each of the 6 numbers it tried. I don't have voicemail.
I tried reinstalling my modem (external Trendnet USB modem). No luck, so I tried installing my husband's working modem (Hiro V.92 56k external) and that did not work on my pc. I tried installing my trendnet modem on my husband's pc & it didn't work there. (I put his original modem back with his original PC & he's all good to go again after being very nervous about what I was doing!).
I have a phone sharing the same jack my modem uses which works - I replaced the cord & the splitter. Still no luck.
I set my pc back to an earlier time, no luck
I've "pinged" my modem & that along with standard computer query says the modem is working.
What gets me is that my husband's modem didn't even work on my PC, so I'm not sure if my modem is the problem, the AOL set up is or the PC itself has some problem.
I deleted every file that referenced the word "broadband" on my pc.
Where can I check to figure out what my problem is & get it all back together again?
Please help - thanks!

Wow, we may not help but next time ask here first.
Before I get confused.
You want and need to use dial-up and you don't want to and don't have broadband. Is that correct?

Yes, that is correct - sorry I've made it confusing - I'm in a mudslide of ignorance & am going off to tremble in a corner. hahahaha. Ugh is more like it...!

if it were me I would uninstall aol, run
ccleaner, then reinstall aol. then again if it
were me I would cancell aol and use :

you don't need to use there crap software.
they supply a user id & password and you
use whatever dailer your OS has.larry

It didn't quite solve the problem, but I'm getting a different error message. I uninstalled all AOL versions & reinstalled AOL8b.
I got this error message when trying to connect to the internet:
"Error (Modem: Agere Systems USB2.0 Soft Modem on Com3) The modem has reported that there is no dial tone. You can choose 'Always Dial'" ( I didn't choose that).I called our home phone that shares the jack with the modem from my cell & it was busy. I picked up the phone that shares the modem's jack & it was silent.
I unplugged the phone cord from the modem, our line was still busy according to my cell phone & the shared phone was still silent.
I unplugged the phone cord from the wall, Our line was no longer busy when I called from my cell & the modem shared home phone had a dial tone.
I plugged the cord back into the modem & the shared jack, and on the shared phone I got this message "Your call cannot be completed as dialed, please try again".
So I unplugged the modem cord from the jack & the home phone had its dial tone again, but I'm left without the internet.
Could it be I need to get a new modem after all?
Please advise, thanks!
