My computer has a partition of 98se and XP pro. I can keep a strong connection through my internet provider (modem) in 98se, but when I link through in XPpro my connection only will last about two to three minutes until I am booted off and then it has to redial. I thought that maybe I just needed to update my zoom modem, but there are none since I updated last year.

I have had this re-occuring problem with my internet connection in XP ever since I had this computer built over two years ago. I have went to the extreme of having my internet provider come to my house to check on this problem, but it is always the same outcome.

Anyone have any idea what may be doing this since my modem is working correctly in 98se, but not in XP pro?

There are many nasties on the internet that now focus on XP and 2000 and lesser on 98 and Me. A great example of this is the blaster problem.

If you can hold your connection through 98 then there is no reason why you can't in XP.

Use the 98 op system to connect to the internet and download a firewall for yourself firstly. zonealarm is good.

goto www.zonealarm.com and get the free personal use copy.

Then go to www.microsoft.com and download the following pathes and install them all on your xp operating system.

copy and paste them into your url bar and download them. Copy them over to your xp partition then fire up XP and run them all.

This will go a long way to keep your connection up on the XP side of things.

Finally check to see you have the latest driver for your modem for XP and you can do that by going to the manufactures website and downloading it. When you engage the firewall try to only let the program you know of access the internet..although some service need to access the net as well such as NT Kernal, Generic Host and NDIS user...you must let these through in order to access the net...everything else will the programs that you wish to access the net such as explorer, outlook ect.

Hope it works for you
