Go to; "Start", then "Connect to", then "show all connections" then right click on the network your using and choose "properties" then select the check box at the bottom that reads,"Show icon in notification area when connected"

Youre computer may be hiding that icon, try right clicking on the task bar, at the bottom of that tab click on customize, then make sure ur network icon doesn't hide itself

Hoppe that helps ^^

Try this link. This FAQ is written for Gateway computers but the procedures are the same for all PC running XP

How do I show the icon in the notification area when connected to a network?

Hope this helps
