After upgrading to XP my internet seems to be incredibly slow, sometimes stopping loading completely. The only way to get around this is to restart after half an hour or so of being on the net. Has anyone else had this problem?

I'm on broadband and use Mozilla firefox, if thats any help...

Cheers!

What firewall do you use(hardware/software), or do you just use the XP firewall? Have you set your security settings correctly? Do you have Spybot, Adaware, Spywareblaster installed(available from http://wilders.org/), and have you scanned for spyware from the safe mode? Have you emptied your temp internet files and off line content files?

I've not installed any firewall myself, so it'll just be the XP one. In the my security settings I've got Internet content allowed at a custom level, so I'm guessing thats right...
I've no idea of what Spybot, Adaware, Spywareblaster even are - combat viruses I presume? Which one is best to download?
How do I scan for spyware?
I've emptied my temp internet files before and thats not done anything.

Is this a common problem when upgrading to XP?

Thanks for your help btw

I've only just upgraded to xp myself & all went well till I connected to the net...everything (net-wise) slowed right down & I noticed my modem light was working overtime. I'd disabled my anti virus prog to make sure the upgrade went smoothly but when I re-activated it I found I had a s---load of trojans/virus's on my pc all of a sudden. (which was the cause of the internet slowdown).

A mate also experienced the same prob...as soon as he logged onto the net after an upgrade...he got infected....(not sure if it's something to do with xp updating itself & catching virus's that way).

Anyways...got shut of the virus's & my net returned to normal so I'd suggest you make sure you've a good anti virus prog running & check your system out...

ran a check on my windows xp cd prior to posting this & it came back virus free...hth...Andy.

spybot etc scans for spyware...just do a search on google for spybot & you should find a download for it...personally I would suggest you may have a virus problem.

Evening,
Did you do a clean install of XP or did you do an upgrade installation? XP likes a clean install the best and you should also have at least 256 Mb of Ram for it to run smoothly.
A lot of people who upgraded have a lot of problems compared to those who did a clean installation.
As the other posts say, get Spybot and Adaware and run them frequently to keep your system clean.
Just my 2 cents,
XDon

Above all, please do not trust an AV program on an install CD, without updating it first! These virii are being born on a daily basis. You need to check updates at least twice a week or more. And run your AV twice a week or more. This applies to anti spy and adware as well. It's a nuisance but absolutely necessary.

Please install a firewall. MS version if nothing else -- but it does leave a lot to be denied. There are several free versions out there. I use ZoneAlarm, but there are others like, Kerio that are also free but sometimes not as friendly in setting them up. But any firewall will give you some kind of protection. Without it, you are guaranteed to be infected by a virus, trojan, worm various kinds of malware, pop-up nasties -- the whole lot. And I don't mean sometime or other but in just days. Some poor souls have been clobbered on the first day on the 'net. Don't go online without a firewall! If you have a router, it probably has a built-in firewall -- but check it.

Just my tuppence.
Bob
