Sony Vaio's microphone stopped working all of a sudden. It has a built-in internal microphone but it no longer works. When I connect an external microphone it works ok, even though sound quality degradaded. Is there any way to update the drivers?

To make things clear to the readers about your Computer problems, please try to be as specific as possible.

As you may know, the Company Sony makes, among other things, different types of Computers:Desktop, NoteBook, TV-PCs etc. These different types of Computers may all come with in the VAIO family. In each VAIO Family of a particular type of Computer, they have different Series and these will be clearly marked somewhere on the body of the computer. As the hardware in each of them differ, it is very imporatnt to know what one is talking about when one says "I have a Sony Computer or I have a Sony VAIO." Most Brand Name Computers have this Make >Model >Series classification to avoid confusion:-)

The INTERNAL Speakers embedded on to the MoBO or connected to the MoBO Front Panel SPKR connector but place somewhere within the case of a Desktop Computer is mainly meant for BIOS Beeps and some limited Audio messages. They don't need any Windows Drivers. The EXTERNAL Speakers connected t the Sound Card eother Onboard or inseerted in the PCI Slots, will work only with Windows Drivers. Their functiona can at times be improved with better drivers for that OS if released by the Manufacturer. Here comes the need to know what machine is the one with problem:-)

Hope this helps.

Double click the sound icon in the systray. Check if there is a volume control for the internal Microphone in both the Playback and Recording controls. Make sure it's not muted or turned down.

Hi, thanks for your response. Sorry for insufficient information. This is a laptop: Sony Vaio PCG-FRV 25. Processor is P4 2.66GHz, Hard Disk 40GB, Memory 512MB DDR SDRAM.

Basically, now the internal speaker does not work at all. Only external microphone works with poor performance.

I checked from the recording options whether microphone is muted or not. When mute is unchecked as soon as external mic is plugged in I get an unbearable feedback. After reading some recommendations from Skype's audio setting, I checked "MUTE". Now microphone is set as muted and "mic boost" in advance options is unchecked. This is how I could make the external microphone somewhat work. Even though it does not make sense to me how the mic work at all with MUTE checked.

I'm not sure whether it is related but I noticed this degradation after installing Logitech Webcam. That has an internal USB microphone. It becomes default. I disabled it. And finally uninstalled it. But it is the same.

This is really frustrating. I appreciate your help.
