I have just completed a full reinstall of XP Home on a new Maxtor 80GB drive - plus all the on-line MS updates. But I have NOT been unable to install any progs, drivers, games etc (even updated VIA 4IN1 drivers. I get a - An error occurred while launching the setup. The remote procedure call failed. - I've reinstalled a couple of times and I'm now going crazy - any help would be apreciated. MP PS I have just read all the prob messages on site re InstallShield - it's about time we had an alternative option. Their site is about as helpful as an ashtray on a motorbike too.

Sounds reminiscent of the blaster virus. There are removal tools for that. If you just completed the install, it is unlikely you have the blaster virus already.
Could also be that the RPC is disabled in Services. Go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services, and scroll down to Remote Procedure Call. Go to properties, and be sure the first of the two entries is set to automatic, and the second to manual.
You will undoubtedly get more erudite answers than this.

Look in the Startup tab of msconfig to see if you have the Blaster Worm. That is msblaster.exe If you do then uncheck it.
Start, Run, then type: msconfig
