I have 98se and im trying to upgrade to windows xp. I have windows xp home edition upgrade. When i run it from my desktop and it does some stuff and restarts, to start the installing process, and it comes up atapi.sys error or dmboot.sys error. When i boot from the cd it runs either error too. What can i do? If i have to reformat and put a fresh copy on thats ok if i can do that with an upgrade copy. I know i could do that with my old 98se copy.

Not only can you use your upgrade copy for a clean install (just have your 98 CD handy when it asks during the installation process), I HIGHLY recommend it. If you just go to upgrade it from 98 without reformatting, you're going to have all the Win98 crap left over. Things will probably work much better with a clean install.
