OS: win xp pro
CPU/Ram: p4 3.0
Comment:

I have had so many problems with this compter. I am ready to go insane. I have a new p4 3.0 cpu, pcchips main board w/ami bios, 120gig maxtor hard drive, and radeon 9600xt graphics card.

When i 1st got it I was able to install win 98 and upgrade to xp no problem and installed all the drivers and everything was good then it started restarting itself. i eventually got a pop up saying that my bios needed to be updated. i formated and deleted the partition. it would let me reparttion using my win 98 start disk. I got a partitioner and was able to partition it and update the the bios.

since then i cant sucsefully install xp. i can install 98 fine. i tried to do a clean install of xp and no luck. everytime i try to install xp it says files are unable to load(never the same ones) or after it installs file are "missing/coruppted". last night it let me totally clean install xp with no problems. i was so happy....i logged in and nothing would work right..anything i tried to do errored out....i shut down and restarted and now file "system32\config\system" is missing/corrupt.

should i try to it again without canging prtition to ntfs?
should i clear cmos and install everything then try to update bios?
should i get the baseball bat and just go to town?

Well Jason,

Run a Diagnostic on the Hardware of your system, most likely your HDD seems to be the problem... Anyway, if the HDD passes the diags then try a new Windows XP CD... Let us know what happens...

Hi Jason,

The smooth move would be to install 98se and leave well enough alone. With 98 the BIOS update would likely have been unneccesary.

But if you feel compelled, get a w98se boot disk and the new fdisk:

New FDISK

If your XP CD is "full" after partitioning, and formatting with 98, you can:

xcopy r:\i386 c:\i386\
c:\i386\winnt

If at first you don't succeed, you're about average.

Wipe the drive and start afresh:

Install from the XP CD even if it is an upgrade CD it will ask for a Genuine Supporting CD during install, you do not need and it is unwise to go the W98 to XP route, as the two O/Ses are many moons apart.....

If it's "full" it will install with no previous version of windows.

If not, it will ask for a "qualifying product" or some such silliness. It may suffice to show it the w98 CD.

Or you may get by with a phoney "installation: like this:

md c:\windows
type nul > c:\windows\win.com

Ok Jason...

This is how you repair that file:

Boot to Recovery Console (the First R) and at the command prompt type the following command:

copy c:\windows\repair\system c:\windows\system32\config\system

Then type Exit and Restart the System and see if that helped... And let us know what happened...

Guyz,

Am Sorry for not understanding... I needed to ask... What is with the Windows XP CD "FULL"?? What does it mean.?? Are you refering to the Full Version of the Windows CD or something like that... Please Clarify... And Jason incase you have trouble getting to the "first screen", here is how you do it...

You need to start the Windows XP Setup again... Initially it will Load all the necessary Files and then Comes the First Screen with 3 Options:

1) Press Enter to Start the Windows XP Setup (Something Like that)
2) Press R to repair Windows XP using the Recovery Console (This is where you need to be to hit that "R" in the "1st Screen")
3) (I dont remember the 3rd Option, anyway i hope this helped)

i dont have a 1st screen. the 1st screen i see is the error message.

you can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the original setup cd-rom.
selcet "r" at the 1st screen to start repair.

i did
d:i386\winnt again
i get
setup needs to know where the win xp files are located. enter.......
d:\
then i get in the winxp setup
setup did not detect smartdrive on your computer..........
i enter to continue without smartdrive
then it inspects the comuter and gives me the message about not having enough space

setup was unable to locate a drive with the required amount of free space.
setup cannot continue. press enter

ok thats where i am at. i am using my 98se floppy as my boot disk. i am an xp boot disk (6 floppies) but when i try to use them i get an i\o error.
i am thinking maybe because the partition is ntfs and i am using a boot disk that doesnt recognize ntfs partitions that why i am getting the message about not enough space???I really dont know.

I hope this helps you to help me and sorry to be such a pain.

i learn so much every time i have a computer problem, I just hate that i have to learn so much all at once this time.

Ok Jason

I am Sorry to ask all these Questions... But why are you using the Windows XP boot Floppies or Windows 98 to start Windows XP Setup??? Why dont you just put in the Windows XP CD and start the setup from there (just curious)???

Anyway... how much is your HDD Capacity??? Which HardDrive is it??? Is it a normal IDE Hard Drive or a SATA Hard Drive??? I will try my level best to Help You...

Oh And also, since you first installed 98, Did you also convert the Partition to NTFS??? And also try doing FDISK to see all the partitions you have...

i am actually working on getting another copy, but will take days maybe even weeks. (not sure how reliable he is) i will have to use my registration code though right?

i am gonna try one more time with current computer. if that dont work i was thinking about moving the HDD to another computer and try there and see what happens. should i try to it again without canging prtition to ntfs? if i clear the cmos does that get rid of the update to the bios? should i clear cmos and install everything then try to update bios?

Cool Jason,

Thats right... You will have to use your same regsitration Code... not sure if Updating your BIOS was or is a good Idea... My Personal Experince... Never Update Your BIOS untill and Unless its very necessary... And yeah Swapping HDD would not be a bad idea... So we will talk after a few days i guess...

Take Care,
Nick
