It sounds like you have pretty a good mess going on with the OS right now and i doubt that there is any way to recover other than do a complete and clean re-install of the OS. But we can give it a shot, first, what procedure did you use to do the install??

I don't use WinXP but if all you did was install over the top the files should still be there. You need to take possesion of them but I don't know exactly how to do that. You may want to use the help files.

Did you install XP SP1 by booting the system from the CD? You may have formatted over the top of all your documents and applications.

Alternatively, look at My Documents for other user names: the documents may be stored under a different user profile.

If you booted from CD it should have already found a windows installation. Did you select repair on this? If not, it would have created a new folder such as Windows.000 and you should have 2 windows XPs running on a dual boot. If you only have 1 windows folder and no dual boot, then you must have re-formatted the drive and possibly lost all your data.
