Okay, when trying to install Windows XP Pro (fresh install) I get certain errors:
"The file xxx failed to copy properly"
Something along those lines, I can retry the copy, skip the file or quit the install. Holding down enter retries, and eventually each file copies.

However, these files end up without digital signatures, and things likes DirectX 9.0b fail to install because these files aren't digitally signed.

The files that fail are:
msgina.dll
setupapi.dll
quartz.dll
luna.mst
cards.dll

I've tried different installation cds, different CDRoms, and different IDE cables. But the same files fail to copy without error.

I've bought a new Hard Drive, thinking the old ones might have failed, but the same errors appeared.

I'm hoping someone has any form of suggestion.. any at all.

Thanks.
(Hopefully I've made sense)

Are you overclocking by any chance? Have you tested your ram for errors. I have had similar issues in the past. sometimes it was the CD I was using, once it was incompatible ram. I had used the identical hardware in ME without problems but XP would not instal without errors until I took out one of my two sticks of ram. Had to buy a new stick that was a better match.

I'm not overclocking.

Haven't checked my RAM yet. I downloaded that memtest86, but haven't got around to checking the RAM.

I hope it's not the RAM, it's not a generic brand, and I picked it because it performed better than all other top brands in the 3200 category (tested by my only trusted PC mag).

I guess I should mention that I have had the install working perfectly, however that was before my last PSU blew, taking out my old motherboard. But, everything has now been replaced (new system was running with the hard drives from the old system until I bought the new one). Nothing in this system was running when the last PSU blew.

I had a similar problem on a clients machine and resolved the problem by reseating the ram. It seems XP is rather temperamental when it comes to ram.

Resetting the RAM? How do you mean?

One more thing I just thought of. On my motherboard (MSI KT6 DELTA LSR) you have to manually set the FSB for the RAM. When I installed XP the first time, I hadn't changed the FSB from it's default of 100mhz.. I set it to 166 after XP installed (without error). However, now it is set at 166 all the time.. could it be the higher FSB causing problems (note, 166 is the speed of my RAM).

I had a similar problem with an ME machine.
Wouldn't install without errors.
It turned out to be mismatched RAM.
I have heard recommendations about underclocking your system to get it installed.
It could be that your PCI Bus speed is out of sync.
But my initial suspicion would be the RAM. If you have two sticks of RAM. Try removing one and then try to install.
As far as reseating the RAM. The Poster was suggesting that you remove the RAM and then reistall it, make sure you install it firmly.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I just re-installed and fixed the problem though.

As I said, my motherboard's default FSB is 100mhz, and even though my ram uses 166mhz, if the FSB is set to that during XP's install.. things go wonky. So a quick change back to 100mhz, and a reinstall.. and everythings beautiful.

I really wish I knew why this was, and I'm going to email MSI about it, hopefully they have an idea. On the brighter side of things.. I now know my XP CD Key by heart :P
