installing xp w/ usb optical drive

Hi,
I have a dell laptop. 500MHz with 128 mb ram. It has no floppy drive and connects to a dvd/cd-rw via usb. The bios can't boot from usb.
So I have an XP disk, a 2.5" ide to usb caddy and a second computer. My thinking is that i will load the files i need on to the laptop hdd via the caddy and then attach the hdd to the laptop and start the setup, at which point the usb dvd drive will have been recognised.
