Dad bought Windows XP. It it legal for me to install it on my computer.
Dad says u can only install it on one computer & when u go on the net it forces u to register & it logs your cd key in an online database so u can only have it running on one computer.
I find this hard to beleive. The CD isnt being burnt or anything I just want to install it. Is this ilegal or do I have to buy & register my own copy?

Also... is the winXP cd bootible if i chance the boot sequence in my BIOS to my cd-rom first? Can I format my hard drive from that point to have a fresh Install of just XP?

Any help would be appreciated. thanks

2nd sentence is a typo. I meant to type: Is it legal to install it on my computer?

One license, one installation. As soon as the OEM, upgrade or retail version of XP is activated on a computer, it is tied to that computer; you will not be able to activate it on a second computer without talking to Microsoft.

You can boot from the XP CD and partition/format your hard drive(s) before installation.

Cráp. 'scuse my French. I know people who have installed Xp on 5 different machines in their homes, and had no problems whatsoever, I personally run my copy on 2 machines.

Microsoft like to pretend it's illegal, but in actual fact there is no law against it.

@Hooner

Have you ever read the EULA? One license, one installation.

I'm well aware that it is possible to install XP on any number of computers. Without using cracks, pirated VLE versions, or lying to Microsoft's tech support, it isn't possible to activate XP on more than one machine.

Bleh - Bill Gates needs to get a life. He already is the richest man in the U.S. Isn't that enough for him? Does he have to not allow us to install softwhere on more than one of our computers? Seriously. I mean - who really goes to the store and buys 2 copies of Windows XP just because they have more than one computer? (No offense to anyone who does of course).

Ya gotta admire Crusher's rationale: if no one finds out about it, it's not illegal; or rather, who cares if it's illegal.

Well, Crusher, wait til you start living in the real world. Or sooner, wait until your computer stops working. Then you'll get it.

" do they log the cd key in an online database? " - yes - plus your Hardware setup

" do they force u to register online? " - you don't have to Register at all

" what if u dont have the net? " - you Activate by Phone - it gives you the Number

Your Dad has presumably already done that on his Computer

Hi
Just install it, activate it, I think you will find you have no problems. I have installed my version on 4 different pc's.(within my family) without absolutely no problems.

Yes you can install it and all that and yes its illegal.

Its not uncommon for people to do this even buisness's however when you get caught the penalties are pretty steep.

Look at the RIAA. Different material but you get the idea of where copyright infringment is going.

if you install xp on a different machine you are violating your agreement that you have to say yes to when you install the computer.

As i understand it that agreement that you press yes to at the install of the OS is a legally binding document.

If you are violating what you are agreeing to then you are breaking the law.

In addition when microsoft collects enough of the pirated/misused codes they will prevent them from getting service packs and some updates.

Ok, there's a change in the XP EULA that means you can only install it on ONE computer, instead of multiple (as was the case in earlier versions), it is possible to install it without any problems on more than one computer.. just illegal, but Microsoft do have too much money anyway...

Secondly, yes the Win XP cd is bootable if you change your bios boot order, and before installation it gives you the option of reformatting fully first :)
