Installing XP on Dell Inspiron 7000

I am attempting to instal Windows XP Home Edition onto a Dell Inspiron 7000 laptop. This system is a 300Mhz PII with 256Mb of Ram a 6gig HD and an ATI Video Card. Microsofts website lists it as XP compatible but I'm having problems.
I have successfully installed XP Home on another computer so I'm not sure what the problem is with this one. I get through all the formatting (I change the partition from FAT32 to NTFS) and the installation begins. After about 30 minutes my screen goes black. That's it nothing else. I have to power down the laptop and then reboot.
Once I reboot the installation restarts. I've done this about 5 times now. I even went back and did a full format of the drive (instead of a quick format) and that didn't even help.
My other computer I had issues with a video card but it atleast installed. The problem did not occur until I went to boot into XP. So far with my Inspiron I haven't been able to even complete the installation.

Hi,
I am running XP Home Edition on my Inspiron 7000 without any problems - PII 400, 256MB RAM, 10GB HD, ATI RAGE LT PRO (8MB). How are you starting the installation - from floppy disk or booting directly from CD? You may need to change some of your BIOS options... I think from a floppy disk (boot floppy from windows ME) is your best bet.

I am booting directly from the XP Installation CD. Did you update your BIOS before installing XP?

Is there not an issue with NTFS on a hard drive less than 20 GB? Just a thought.
