Hi. I recently reformatted my hard drive on my spare PC and I want to install XP on it. I put the cd in when it's starting and it says it's not a system disk, so i put a win 98 boot disk and it goes through loads of stuff then tells me what the cd drives have changed to (R & S) and then has the A:\> so i type r: and it goes to R:\> then i type setup and it says that the program can not unr in dos mode. Can someone please help me? Thanks.

Run WINNT.exe instead of setup. It's located in the CD's i386 folder.

You need to go into your computer's BIOS setup program and set it so that it will boot from the CD-ROM first. This way you can boot from your XP disc and launch setup properly. Usually the way to get into setup is by pressing DEL right after you turn on the computer. Once there look for a section called BOOT. Make sure IDE CD-ROM is listed first.
If this still doesn't work you can launch XP setup from DOS by typing WINNT in your CD's i386 directory. This is not the recommended way of doing it though; that would be to download the Windows XP boot floppy disks from Microsoft or www.bootdisk.com
Good luck

I run the xp setup disk from bootdisk.com and start the winnt program. Setup begins but then stops with the error that it couldn't find anywhere for a swap file. Any suggests?
