Installing XP *after* Win98

My current config: One HD:
Principal partition: C: FAT32
Extended partitions: D: E:
Win98 is currently installed on E:
I want to create a new extended partition (using Partition Magic) to install XP.
Is it possible, as I read that XP *must* be installed on the C: drive, in the principal partition ?

Nope there is no such requirement that WinXP must be installed on C:. I would recommend do not create partitions using Partition Magic as the past results have not been very impressive. I would opt that method only if I need to create a partition on an existing partiton. If you have RAW space or unassigned space, I would recommend you to create the partition using Windows XP's internal partition maker, which comes up if you boot from Windows XP CD and start the installation. You get ample options to delete and create partitions as per your need.

Is that sure that it won't begin by writing some files on C: ?
Moreover, I already used Partition Magic to manage the current partitions. Won't there be some problems if now I use another partitionning software ?

When you install XP it will install its relevant boot/start-up files to C: root (which is where '98 boot-files also reside). The actual system files (the OS itself) will go wherever you decide to put it.
Summary: I don't get it. Are you installing XP after 2000 or 2000 after XP. If you install XP after 2000, no problems, just do it. If you install 2000 after XP, the 2000 boot manager may not recognize XP. I ...
