installing windows XP on external hard disk

Specs: Windows XP sp2
I want to install Windows XP on a partition on my external hard disk. I have cleaned out a partition (but i have not deallocated it into raw space).

How do i go about it? My CD drive doesn't work either to make things worse. Can i install winXP from my internal HDD to my external HDD?

A question... Is this a laptop or desktop/tower system? If a desktop/tower system - seriously consider new/replacement CD/DVD unit - they cost so little and a system without a working unit is going to be a real pain...

If a laptop then similarly - although one "may" pay a wee bit more for a new unit... - depending on make/specs etc?

MS doesn't want you to install to external drives as in the ability to boot a system from a usb attached drive.

Why do you want to do that anyway?

"Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, antivirus, anti-spyware, Live CD's, backups, are in my top 10
