Copy the i386 direectory to the drive and use the appropriate setup disks.

Why are you going at it in this fashion?

Just how do you intend to run the installation from a presumably formatted (blank) HDD?

Do you plan on copying the installation directories to the HDD from another drive externally or plan to first copy those folders to the HDD from a disc before running the install executable via DOS?

The internet is a series of tubes!

Pull the drive and connect it to a desktop PC using a cheap ide to laptop adapter. Make it bootable by doing a 'sys' from a win98 startup floppy. Copy the win2K folder to it. restore it to the laptop.

Do yourself a favor BACKUP!

first, create a bootable USB stick with a win98 boot image (all you need is here: www.bootdisk.com). make sure it has the following files: fdisk.exe, format.exe smartdrv.exe and dos drivers for your usb link cable

boot from usb, run fdisk to delete old existing partition, probably non-dos, create new partition(s) - keep in mind that fat32 is limited to 40 gB, reboot and format partition(s). run SMARTDRV.exe. now create a folder I386 (md i386) and copy all files via link cable into this folder.

from this folder run WINNT.exe

good luck

p.s.: if you don't have dos drivers for your cable, you may create 2 partitions and install a temporary windows me (for it has usb support), move the folder i386 to the 2nd partition and then reformat partition no. 1, boot from stick, run smartdrv.exe and then winnt.exe from d:\i386

Today's subliminal thought is: 'Calm down ... it's only ones and zeros.'
