Hi,
I am trying to install Windows 2000 on my Sony Vaio laptop (Sony Vaio C1). However, this type of laptops only come with external CD and Floppy and are unable to boot from a USB key. I tried everything (the computer won't boot with external CD drive other than Sony PCMCIA, which I don't have) but I can't run the Win2000 installation. Do you guys have any ideas beside taking out my hard drive?
Thanks,
Rob

Boot on a 98se floppy, partition, format and sys.
Copy the autoexec & config & CD drivers to HD.
Shut down and swap FDD for CD.
Restart.
If at first you don't succeed, you're about average.M2

Yeah, the problem is that I cannot boot from just about any type of external device (i.e. floppy, CD, usb key). What I tried to do is to partition my disk in 2 partitions and install DOS 7 on the second partition and then use Windows's boot menu. However, to install DOS7, I also need to boot from the setup disk... That's why I'm stuck.

If you can't boot from floppy, things will get harder before they get easier.
Is this a VAIO "feature" or is it broke?

I tried booting from an external USB CD-ROM, but it didn't work. I called SONY and they explained that the computer can only boot from an external SONY PCMCIA CD-ROM. Apparently, this is a standard feature for this model.

Did they have a handy excuse for why it won't boot from floppy?

I actually never bought the floppy drive and I don't have one my desktop pc. I was just wondering if there is some way to install DOS 7 on my second partition and somehow make boot it.

This lsite may offer you a solution (one util) for a bootable usb stick...

Thanks a lot for your help guys. I finally gave up on the idea, installed the hard drive on my desktop pc and was able to boot the Win2K installation.
