Hi,
I have a question. How do you install a tar.bz2 that contains source code for a program for windows xp sp2?
I know that you need cygwin, but what else do I need?

larry

To start with, I guess you will need a program to decompress the .BZ2 file. It looks like BZIP2 is what you need.

I have winRar to decompress the file so bzip is not needed, but thanks for mentioning it.
However, I still need to know what other tools I need in cygwin to configure and install the .tar.bz2 package.

That's like asking how you install a .zip file. .tar.gz2 is just an archive file, and it has no inherent value.

Looking at Cygwin all you have to do to install the package is to run setup.exe. You will want to open the tar file using winRar and then extract the files to a folder. Setup.exe should be in the extract package for the update.

I apologize if I didn't make this clearer.
I installed the default cygwin setup, which I'm pretty sure that it didn't install the rest of the stuff such as the dev tools like make, gcc, autotools etc. I am assuming that I need those installed, but which ones do I need?

Here is an example of a .tar.bz2 file that contains the source files. It is almost identical to the one I have. This one however has a "setup.exe" but I am not messing with this one because this is just an example I am showing you.
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/...
NOTE: The file is safe, so don't worry about it.
The source files that are in my .tar.bz2 package does not contain a setup.exe file, so therefore I can't install it. Again, I assume that I need the dev tools with cygwin to configure, make, and install the package that contains the source files, but I am not sure which ones(tools) I need with cygwin.
Once I acquire those tools, I know that I need to input a few commands.
Ex:
tar jxvf scribus-1.2.1.tar.bz2
cd package
./configure
make installThat's about all I can think of right now. I can't explain this any better than this.
ps, I have explained this to the cygwin mailing list, but it's been a week and no one has replied yet. I've searched through their mailing list archives, faqs, documentations, but I have not yet found a similar problem or an answer.

I would try checking newsgroups like http://dir.gmane.org/gmane.os.cygwin. More found at http://gmane.org/find.php?list=cygwin.

Hi SysLock,
That was the first thing that I did, and yes I posted there a few days ago(almost a week) and haven't gotten a reply yet.

The setup.exe is the main program for installing the tools you will need. To add or uninstall tools (packages) you run the setup program each time. You will need to rerun the setup program and install (under KDE) the C+ tools. The setup defaults aren't much if you expand each area to view which tools are installed. Which ones will depend on your preference and the package you have already downloaded needs to be put in the proper cgywin folder and after running setup, select local directory from what I have read. Best advice I can offer from here is to < a href="http://sources.redhat.com/cygwin/cygwin-ug-net/setup-net.html">read all the documentation and research what tools you will need online through google or cgywin support groups. If your looking for other Unix based software, you can look for Fedora or SUSE that won't run in Windows, but is it's own standalone OS and is free with a GUI interface. Hopefully, some of this will have helped.

Yes I am aware that the setup.exe is the main program to install the tools that I need. All of the other rest that you mentioned I already know about, but you said "install (Under KDE) the C+ tools"......Is that what I need to configure and install my program? I think that is part of it, but I know that that's not it, and I know there's more to it.
The thing is, I don't know what tools I need and I don't want to install the whole package of devel and others randomly. Although that will most likely fix my problem, but that will just kill space and plus some of them I don't even know and I don't use. I used Fedora Core 4 and OpenBSD before, most of the time I was at the terminal inputting syntax commands to install my favorite programs, and to keep up to date with the latest patches for my applications, but ran up on a lot of missing dependencies but manage to fix them all. Bottom line is, I've had my time with syntax commands and the linux environment.
Anyway, thanks for the advice and the link, I guess I'll have to keep responding to the cygwin mailing list and hope to get a reply.

larry
