Installing RAM

I just bought a new stick of RAM and I was wondering if there is anything I have to do for the installation of it other than just putting it in the empty slot? That's what I've done so far and it doensn't seem to have made much difference at all.
There's nothing special you really have to do when installing more RAM except installing it so that the pins and notches fit. Make sure you put stick of RAM in the correct way. Theirs only one way it will fit, press frimly but don't force it.
Most importantly, discharge the static electricity in your body BEFORE you touch anything inside your PC or it's fried. Do this by touching a bare metal area for second then procedd to install the RAM. Aslo, when installing sometimes you have to ANGLE to RAM card as it goes into the slot and you should hear a soft click when it's properly in place.

You might want to make sure you have turned off the power and that you are properly grounded.

Are you implying that the system doesn't recognise the extra memory?

Well, for one, most ram needs to be installed in pairs. To get 768 megs, you could install 2 256mb's and 2 128 mb modules. Just putting in one most of the time wont work. Now in SDRAM, im not sure... we had a compaq at my uncle's and it only had 3 slots! Another thing is you need to have exact same chips next to each other. Consult your motherboard mfr bor better support beyond this. No installation is required, its sort of like PnP but the power needs to be off.

Check to see if the extra RAM is recognized first. Navigate to the control panel, then the system icon. It should display the amount of RAM recognized. If it does show the correct amount, then most likely you have "extras" loading at startup that are slowing you down. If it does not recognize, then go back to make sure all is seated properly. You may also need to unplug the computer from the wall outlet and then restart. Ive also run into some circumstances that required me to reset the CMOS for the new RAM to be recognized. If you have to result to this, make sure you enter the Bios Setup and write down the settings so you can restore the values if you have problems. Good Luck.
