Installing RAM - What is Channel A or B?

January 27, 2011 at 13:52:14
Specs: Windows XP

I have just installed 512 of RAM, but now when my PC boots it states that RAM should be installed equally for Channel A and Channel B for optimum performance. I don't know which "channel" is which. I have four slots: 1=256, 2=new 512, 3=256, 4=empty. Should they be in a different order? Thanks for any help!

You have 4 ram slots and 3 sticks of ram installed. If you use 2 sticks in channel A or channel B it will use dual channel mode which is optimal. You could add another 512 stick in the 4th slot. look at your mobo manual to see what is designated channel A and B. It will work fine the way you have it, but it won't run in dual channel mode with 3 sticks.
