Hi,
Last night I installed some new ram into my notebook PC computer. I added about 1GB.
You see when I removed the 512mb and put in the 1GB it wasn't working quite right so I put the 512mb back. What the 1GB was doing is, it didn't allow the computer to start up the way it should.
So what I did was install the 1GB into the upper slot above the 512mb.
Looking in the diagnostic tool I now have (Page file: 278MB used, 966MB available)
When it use to be 606 used and 638 available.I could use some input on this subject. I'm trying to improve the speed of this computer so I don't run short on RAM.
Thanks,
Jon

You see what I wanted to do was replace the 512mb with the new 1GB but I'm trying this right now to see if it helps.
I have 30 days to return this hardware so.

what happens when you start the computer with the 1GB in?
The page file you mention is Some thing else. To see the memory (RAM) windows detects do this: open the control panel, dict on system properties. On the first page you see will be Your Ram displayed.

Hey Ryan, Thanks for the reply. Well what it dose, it dosen't start up the way it should. I just see the power light and blank screen.
My guess the computer had a hard time reading the new RAM.
Yes when I do read the RAM detail it still displays 512 not 1GB. As I said I installed that 1GB above the upper slot from the 512 chip.

I would suspect that your notebook is not able to handle that much Ram. Computers have limits; that limit depends on brand/model/mobo, etc.
You have not bothered supplying any specs, which in this case might have been "crucial".
Speaking of "crucial"... go to crucial.com, and fill in as many of your computer's specifications as you can, and Crucial will tell you what type and size of Ram chips you can use. No, no purchase necessary.

Your 1gb ram module is probably not compatible with your your mboard / it's main chipset. In the worst cases of ram incompatibility, your computer will not boot.
See response 5 in this for some info about ram compatibilty, and some places where you can find out what will work in your mboard for sure:

Correction to that:
Mushkin www.mushkin.com.....
"Looking in the diagnostic tool I now have (Page file: 278MB used, 966MB available)
When it use to be 606 used and 638 available."The size of the page file is determined by Windows automatically, unless you manually overide it's settings. The amount of physical ram you have doesn't have much affect on the size of the page file, once you have more than a certain minimal amount of ram. The page file's total size will vary by default (it's dynamically sized) depending on what you are doing and what the requirements of programs are at the time.
The amount stated as Used varies depending on what you have running when you look.

Yes it's able to I believe but thanks for the input. Here's what happened for a test I put the 1GB ram back in and when I turn the computer on, it dossen't start like I said before.
But the computer beeps 2/3 times! Looking at the new ram it's loose so its just isn't a perfect fit.
Thanks for the site I checked it out and this is what I came up with,
http://crucial.com/store/listparts....
And it's only $90 some :) All see if I can buy it in stores first, hehe
Thanks for the heads up gang!

"Looking at the new ram it's loose so its just isn't a perfect fit."
It shouldn't be loose. The ram must be all the way down in the slot, the notches on the bottom of the contact edge must line up with the bumps in the slot. If this is a desktop computer, the latches at the ends of the slot are supposed to be against the ends of the module. If this is a laptop, the module should latch into place some other way.
Always unplug the computer, or otherwise remove the AC power to it, whenever you do anything inside your computer case. ATX mboards are always powered in some places, including some contacts in the ram slots, if the ATX power supply is connected to live AC, even when Windows is Shut Down or in Standby or Hibernate modes

Well gang I just ordered RAM from crucial.com and returned the poor chip to office depot. This is going to workout better I can feel it!
Jon

There's nothing wrong with the ram you bought - you just bought the wrong ram. That's common these days.

Hey all, Just got my new RAM from crucial after work and I just installed it! Works wonderfuly :)
I'm looking at 1022mb of ram, hehe
Thanks all for those that shared their thoughts and input with me.
