Hi:
I don't know whether any body can solve a mystery for me: My Parents recently purchased a new computer which had only 256 megabyte memory.

So being an experienced computer user, I said I'd upgrade the memory which I have done but the problem is I installed the 512 chip with the 256 already installed, which I've been able to do previous to this with no problem with other computers systems but when I rebooted the system, it said there was a problem with the OS kernel, is this a problem only with HP systems and is there a workaround?

So I removed the original chip and it booted up ok but my system only recogonises the installed chip as a 490 megabyte, why?

I knew there was a reason my friends warning me against buying HP systems, advice I'd heeded until now, stupid me.

Please help!!!

...it said there was a problem with the OS kernel...
Sometimes helpful to state errors word for word.

Watch for help from others.

Onboard video usually accounts for the descrepancy in ram because video takes some ram [set in the bios]

You need HP recommended ram not just something off the shelf.

Golly gee wilerkers everyone. Learn to Internet Search

yes exactly as wanderer stated....if your new pc came with onboard video it will use or share some of the main ram that you have on you computer...if you want to change this amount you have to go to the bios

Its all good

On one motherboard that I have, ( an MSI ) the Ram can only be placed in a certain order depending on the type, IE:whether it is a single sided DIMM or Double sided DIMM

The order for it may be the Problem,, Could try swapping them around One in the first slot then in the third or what ever,,, If they are different, ?? If not , well just another thing you may look at, or think about, The best thing to do is to look up the model number and find out the Motherboard manufactures, specs. and go from there,

MSI 845e mb 1 gb ram and a p4 2.4n running xp ,win 2000 advanced server and win 98 SE alot to learn and I know so little !!!!
