hi,thanks for reading this first.i plan to buy a IBM60GXP 7200rpm 40GB H.D.D , this harddrive supports ATA100,but my Mainboard only supports UDMA33,so i want to buy a ide controller card(a brand called Promise)but i have never installed this kind of card before, so can anyone tell me what do i do with the controller? And i am gonna install WinXP onto this HDD,how am i suppose to set the "boot from" option in the BIOS?
again thx for reading this,my english is not very good hope u can understand

Probely it is just a pci card.
So put it in a pci slot, put your hd on a new ide controller, and let the bios find your hd.
When the bios find the new hd, boot with the xp cdrom, and install xp on the new hd.

As far as the BIOS thing it depends on your BIOS. If you have an AWARD BIOS, set the first boot item under BIOS FEATURES menu to SCSI. The BIOS thinks that your ATA card is a SCSI card because the basis for allot of the stuff in bios predates IDE ATA Controller cards. If you got your PC from an OEM like DELL, Gateway or Fujitsu-Siemens you'll have the PHOENIX bios which doesn't have this option, but i have seen IDE ATA cards working with these kinds of BIOS just fine. For the cable in order to get the full speed out of your drive / controller you'll need a 40 pin 80 wire cable it still has 40 pins to connect to the controller and drive but has twice as many wires internally throughout the cable to reduce interferance, the Promise cards come with em. hope that helps
