Hi someone gave me this machine as the other machine I gave them is playing up and it seems someone did a fresh install of windows without the systems drivers. The sound is not working and I tried to put in another soundcard as I tried and tried to find the right drivers. I installed SIW and it tells me that the MB is a SiS-741 and the audio is the onboard AC'97 type. I put in an e1938-202 pci card and I am getting no where with installing that. I disabled the onboard sound in the bios and installed what I thought was the right driver named es1938.zip but it is not taking. Device manager shows that it is good but there is no sound. I can't remember the name of the site and I tried driverguide first but everytime I went to get a driver(as there were so many listed there) damn driver guides site failed me. I can't remember the error but it was something about them having a database problem. I don't really care if I install the onboard sound or the ess pci card as long as there is some sound as the person it is going to is not expecting anything fancy.
The video card has also got ayellow question mark next to it in the device manager but it is working. I tried to find out what driver it needs but I am having no luck via the Sis site. I don't know what type of driver/device it is so I can't just download any video driver from there. They did have an option to scan the system and see what is on there but it didn't work. Something about active x controls. I sort of know what that is but I am not sure what they want me to do.

Why don't you just open the case, identify the board, then download/install the correct drivers instead of just guessing? There aren't too many boards based on that crappy chipset...here's the list from SiS:

I can't seem to find anything written on the MB jam. Will get the torch out and have a closer look later today. I have had this experience before where i couldn't find anything so I used SIW to id it.
So what is crappy about this MB....just cheap? and nasty? Hopefully will last long enought for this student. Ah well it is mostly working anyway. I am even on the net on it now.
