I have been having trouble installing directX 9.0c on my computer. The sims 2 requires it to play, and informs me I do not have it, even after I run the installer. This is not a problem with the game, as dxdiag also says I have direcX 9.0b.
The installer itself seems to simply not realise that the version it is trying to install is the newer version, it seems to skip past the installation without changing any files. I have downloaded both the web setup version and the redist, and both produce the same results.
DX 9.0c installs fine on my other computer, which is also running SP2, and the sims 2 (which requires dx9.0c) also runs fine.
The only difference of note between the two computers aside from processor speed and ram size is the graphics cards; I have a radeon 9700 pro with the latest drivers, and the one downstairs has an Nvidea card, exactly which one I can't remember.
I have heard tales from other boards of similar issues with the beta version of 9.0c not letting the final release of 9.0c install, and of people literally manually copying files. If anyone knows how this can be accomplised, be my guest, i'm willing to try it :)
I have tried deleting the registry key so that windows thinks directx is not installed, this made no difference.
I even tried uninstalling directX entirely (note to self: NEVER try it again) and installing in safe mode. Still didn't work.
Please help me as it is sloly driving I insame.
Then how come I have SP2 (control panel confirms I do), yet DXDIAG says I have directX 9.0b?
Could this be the REAL issue at hand?

Interesting; SP2 appears as a downloadable update on windows update, despite the fact I clearly already have it. I didn't actually install SP2 myself, a friend did it for me while I was out. I'm just wondering HOW he actually installed it if windows update isn't registering that I have it.
As I say, control panel confirms I am running SP2. I will try to install SP2 from windows update and see what happens.

I slipstreamed XP with SP2 and did a clean install and I have 9.0c for DirectX. Sorry I don't have an answer for you.

Yeah, I have the same problem... I think. I just got the SIms 2 aswell, and i've already got DirectX 9.0b. When i try to install 9.0c it extracts all the files, and then comes up with an error message when it starts copying them. I tried downloading DirectX 9.0c from microsoft.com, but when it was installing it got the same problem. Whats up? I NEED HELP! I Realllly wanna play the game lol

I had the same problem either. Was wanting to play Sim2 also. When i wanted to install Directx 9.0c, it just passed the installation process and say the files needed are now installed, though it did do install anything at all, and went back to do dxdiag, and is 9.0b. Mine is a radeon too, radeon 9200 se. Asking help too!
