Hi all, happy Easter.
I recently installed windows xp and I now wish to set up cable internet service. I have the actual, physical cable set up and all that I need for it work, but I am confused as to how to actually get the cable up and running on the computer.

I have Comcast high speed cable, and I love it....it is super fast, no question about that. But their customer service blows big time, though.
Check your newspapers for their installation deals; that's what I did. Look for their "first 3 months.....(deal)", whatever it happens to be at this specific time. Then simply call them, as the installation is usually free during their promo offers.
Or, simply call them at 1-800-comcast, and ask them what their current special offers are.
Even though their customer service is really crap, I will say that the high speed internet is damn good. Hope this helps a little. Good luck!

Have you checked with them to see if broadband is available in your area? If it is you need to sign up and they will send you a cable modem with the software and paperwork indicating how to activate your account. Just because you are ready does not mean you can connect to it.

Comcast will set your computer up when they install the cable.

Mark, I don't have any idea where you reside, but in today's newspaper, Comcast started their free install promotion. I reside in Massachusetts; so you might want to just call them, and take advantage of their free install. That is what I did about a year ago. They came out with the modem and software, ran the coax cable, and I was up and running quickly.
As I mentioned, the high speed internet is excellent.....but their customer support has much room for improvement. Hope this helps a little.

Let me go over what everthing looks like. The Ethernet Cord looks like a Phone Cord, accept an Ethernet Cord has big jacks on each end. You should know what a Cable Wire is, and the power cord. 1. Connect one side of the Ethernet Cord to your Cable Modem, and the other end to the computer where theirs a big phone jack to plug it into. 2. Connect the power plug from the Cable Modem to the wall socket (not a surge protecter). 3. Plug any old Cable Wire from where your Cable Wire comes in to the Cable Modem. After all of that, you are ready to install the software. Pop in your Comcast CD, and get started! If your Comcast High-Speed Internet Wizard does not start after you put your CD in, go to >Start >Run. Type in D:\. If D:\ does not work, try E:\. If E:\ does not work, type in F:\. If none of those work, you are in trouble. If you have any more questions, or have any problems, just post the problem up with the subject "Problem for Jason". THANK YOU. Bye!

Like noted above the service depends on were you are.."most" areas that have cable have cable internet..Look for the deals..with bresnan right now they have free (basic) instal or $25.00 premium instal and $29.95 each month for 6 months.....If you can, get the premium instal (it covers you if anything goes wrong with the instal)..With most companys they need to instal a filter in the line......when connecting to your computer you can either use ethernet connection or an open usb port....best is ethernet connection.....Also check for modem cost..most is included in your monthly charge..or you get a discount for owning your own..note: if you buy your own and it dies..you buy a new one...If you get one in the price and it dies, they give you a new one......O'yea if you connect via usb port you will need to make sure they give you an instal disk (dont need one if your hooking up thru ethernet connection).....

using a bigger hammer does work
