installing an XP network (kinda)

Hey....is there a way to network an XP machine using a USB Ethernet adapter, and connecting a cable modem to the ethernet port? I'm not going to be sharing the internet connection, just files and printers.
Everytime I try to connect them, one works, the other doesn't. I even tried switching them around.
Well, can you even establish this kind of network configuration in XP?

Best way to do this is with an Ethernet Un-Twisted Pair (UTP) connection and a hub or switch (switch is better) using RJ-45 connectors. Ethernet cards are pretty inexpensive now, as are switches. If you don't want to do the switch thing, or you will never add a third computer, you can connect the two computers with a cross-over cable - two wires of the same UTP cable are crossed over to allows connection without a switch.
