Simply plugging in to the USB port and the AC power and letting XP find the printer should be sufficient. I don't know how old a printer yours is, but normally XP should have drivers for it,and you shouldn't have to load any. Assume you have PNP loaded in BIOS.

Get the drivers from the HP site and be very careful with HP printers on USB and XP.
Install the software (printer drivers) first and wait to plug in the printer to the USB port when you're told to do so.
If you plug it in first you're gonna have problems like you wouldn't believe.

You need to go to www.hp.com. Click on support and drivers. WinXP does not have the drivers for it. I have a HP932c.

I also have an HP printer(different model)and I lost my installation disk. I tried to set it up by simply plugging in the USB connection for plug-and-play. Like the others have said--don't do that! The HP site has the downloadable drivers(which I had a very hard time trying to install). The alternate method is that they will send you free of charge a replacement installation disk. I got mine in about 2 days.
