An older OS must be installed before XP.

An easy way to do it is go ahead and install Win2K in to the second partition, then reinstall WinXP (you won't lose any info). It will rebuild the boot menu and voila!

I tried first by puting in the cd and then starting the laptop to boot from cd..dint work..
then i tried to put in the cd wen the system was on and install into secord partition...and it did not allow me to do this as i had a newer version of windows compared to w2k...

First of all, check to make sure you set CD-Rom in the bios to boot during boot up. Alternatively, hold F number key(not sure which one 'cause all computer are a bit different), and select boot from CD.
If setting up CDROM boot does not work, then your windows 2k does not have boot files, you need boot files in the Cd in order for it to recognize during boot to load. You would need a start up disk in order to boot.
