Hey.
i want to install windows 'XP PROFESSIONAL' onto a brand new hard drive, i connected the new hard drive to my pc and booted from disc, but it says there is no hard drive connected, i have set the hard drive to 'master' 'slave' 'cable select' and still doesnt work, i also tried adding it as a 2nd hard drive, but still doesnt work (it doesnt even load my old hard drive) i have a brand new XP disc (genuine) but i cant seem to work this out...
please help, thnks

In your BIOS setup screen, usually the first option, you can select the drives and there should be a way for it to Auto select. This way it will recognize your drives. If it is the only drive on that channel, set it Single drive, not master and not Slave. Don't use the old cable select method; it's out-dated. Once you can get the BIOS to recognize your drive, you will be on your way.
I hope this helps.
BobA positive attitude won't solve all your problems, but it will annoy just enough people to be worth the effort.

If it is the only drive on that channel, set it Single drive, not master and not Slave. <<<When u say this, do u mean the pins on the hard-drive?
if u do the only options are..
Device0
Device1
Cable select
Master
Slave
Forcing
Dev1 presentWhat 1 shall i set it to?
thnks

You need to look at the drive itself and probably go to the drive manufactures web site and see what it says there. Different manufactures do things slightly different. For example Seagate drives have Master and no slave, master with slave, and slave.
It should be set to Master if it is the only hard drive, but don't use cable select.
You need to get the drive recognised in the BIOS before you even think about loading the Windows XP disk.

sorry if this information isnt correct, but i havnt done computers in years

Your MBoard is NOT 48 bit LBA compliant. That means you can't use that harddrive without installing a controller card. for mor information on 48 bit LBA look at the link below. You can either install a PCI based controller card or exchange the harddrive for a model 120GB or less.

Ahhh that may explain things, i have used a 120GB in the past and that was sucessful, so i fink i will have to go downgrade to a 120GB...
Thnks for your help guys

Or you can get a controller card. They aren't that expensive. If you are interested post back and I will give you a link for one.

The first link is for a card that supports IDE only. The second link has dual IDE/ATAPI? SATA cards. Read and compare.

that's why we ask for exact specifications sometimes :P
didn't have any time to look up the mainboard yet ... would there be a BIOS update available?

not sure,
but i got a friend comin over to look at it 2moz, he is gonna try, cos he knows loads bout computers, if not i will just downgrade to a 120GB i dont really need a 250GBbut thnks for ur help

See #7. A 266 isn't going to support that drive. I believe VIA did have something to get some 48 bit support. I wouldn't recommend the OP attempt flashing the BIOS, even if there were an update to make it 48 bit compliant.

I assume you have an open PCI slot. If so, the card and drive should work.
Any of the cards I linked to will work.

The answer is yes.
The only thing I might suggest is that you get a controller card that supports more than one IDE harddrive and that also supports optical drives (CD/DVD). The reason is that when you finally upgrade your computer you MAY want to migrate some IDE drives to the new one.
Most new MBoards only have one IDE controller, which will support TWO drives. That may not be enough IDE support for you. Not a big deal, just something to think about.

i only want to run 1 hard-drive cos i dont use my pc for alot of storage.. but its just nice to have 1 big sized hard-drive...
so i wont be needing another 1.wen u say to run CD/DVD rom's wot do u mean cos i got..
DVD-RW
CD-RWbut they work fine atm...do i need a specific controller card

I was talking about the future. If you wanted to move your harddrive and a CDrom and a DVD burner you would still be OK.
I have 3 IDE optical devices, one IDE harddrive AND one SATA drive in my current computer. I wouldn't be able to use many of the newer MBoards without adding a controller card that will work with optical drives.
If you aren't worried about the next computer then just get the one you like. All of them will work.

when you're booting from an add-on card, bear in mind that you may have to set the first boot device to SCSI ... although your controller isn't really a SCSI controller.

okay, well im gonna try n get a controller card, i shall search a uk site, u ask my m8 for 1 :P cos he has loads of brand new spares....
thanks for your help guys, most appreciated
