|Why would you swap the HDD because of a virus? All you needed to do was remove the virus or wipe the drive & start from scratch. The trick to removing many viruses is to do it using a rescue CD without booting into Windows. But if you want to be 100% certain the virus is eradicated, the best route is to reformat the drive.|
I see you listed SP2, why not SP3? It's been available for 4 yrs! And after you installed Windows, did you install all the latest device drivers (chipset, video, audio, network, etc)? You can't access the internet without the network drivers. Did you install all the Windows Updates? Did you install an anti-virus program (AVG, AVAST, or Windows Security Essentials) & an anti-malware program (SUPERAntiSpyware or Malwarebyte's Antimalware)?
Do NOT reinstall Norton!!!
