Installed new hard drive & WinXP now won't access internet

April 29, 2012 at 08:11:18
Specs: Windows XP Service Pack 2, AMD phenom X4 / 1 gig

Installed new hard drive & WinXP now no internet. I had a virus on my old system and have not been able to clear it up. I had internet but no access to the CD rom. I installed a new hard drive, reinstalled WinXP. At that point I could access the CD rom but had no access to internet. Using another computer I have tested the hard drive and the CD rom and they both work. I have tried running all kinds of spyware, virus scan, etc. Need internet access to register the XP and Nortons.

Why would you swap the HDD because of a virus? All you needed to do was remove the virus or wipe the drive & start from scratch. The trick to removing many viruses is to do it using a rescue CD without booting into Windows. But if you want to be 100% certain the virus is eradicated, the best route is to reformat the drive.

I see you listed SP2, why not SP3? It's been available for 4 yrs! And after you installed Windows, did you install all the latest device drivers (chipset, video, audio, network, etc)? You can't access the internet without the network drivers. Did you install all the Windows Updates? Did you install an anti-virus program (AVG, AVAST, or Windows Security Essentials) & an anti-malware program (SUPERAntiSpyware or Malwarebyte's Antimalware)?

Do NOT reinstall Norton!!!

Just wondering....When you reinstalled xp did you have the computer hooked up to the modem rj45... plugged in. If not at the final part of the install it would not detect it and the driver would not be installed 90% of the time.

Go into control panel, system, hardware and look for any yellow ! marks.

Boot from C: and have internet but no cdrom? Are both set as master and on the same ribbon? If so c: master, cdrom as slave
