Howdy. I just installed iTunes for the first time to upload songs to my ipod. Well I had quicktime but it insisted on installing it anyway. I made sure to uncheck the box that assigned all music to open with itunes (i love Windows Media Player). But now WMP has no sound for the songs I open.

Is this some insane Apple plan to get me to come to their HQ and demand blood sacrifice for such injustice? Or did some settings get mistweaked?

If there is a sound icon by the clock, in the lower right of your screen, double click on it to open the controls.

After installing anything from Apple you need to adjust the volume settings. (Or at least I do)

There is no icon at the lower right. I know which you are talking about. I am currently searching for a similar setting in Control Panel.. hmm

Okay. I can't find my Windows XP CD. That pains me greatly. Apparently all the extraneous utilities have been removed (MSPaint, Calculator, Sound managing utility).

I uninstalled iTunes but that didn't work. I tried restoring to two earlier points.

Is there a way to manually fix the settings, say with regedit? I don't mind removing the bullet myself, as long as the doctor walks me through it.

I got the SndVol32.exe from a friend. I made sure only the microphone was muted. But still WMP has no sound.

Does anyone know?

I had a similar problem - upgraded iTunes, then IMMEDIATELY after, my WMP sound didn't work. Post hoc ergo proctor hoc! (after this therefore because of this) My fix wasn't as easy as the muted volume icon, but your fix got me to thinking... I looked at the menu bar option on WMP, and under "Play" is the "Volume" option. I clicked on that, and MUTE was checked!!! Damned i-Tunes programmers obviously added that insidious feature! Unchecking "Mute" fixed the problem.
