Yes.

Easy method back up all your data music, pictures everything.

Put the XP CD in the drive, and boot the system from the CD.

Delete all existing partitons, and rebuild your partitions (you may need to spend some time here deciding what partitions if any you will have)

Once you have your new partitions set up on your hard disks install the OS on your first drive (generally C:\)

Once complete install your AV software and update and scan.

Then go to Microsoft Update and patch your OS.

Then I'd virus scan one more time, install spybot and ad-aware (for the future)

Then I'd get the rest of my stuff installed.

HTH,

J.

Click on startmenu then run, type "msconfig" (without the quotemarks) and press enter. Click the boot.ini tab then click "Check All Boot Paths" This will tell you if all the items in the boot menu exist, if they all do then you have the option to erase one of them, erase the new one. When you reboot you wont get the boot menu, the only thing to remember is that you will 2 copies of xp installed including 2 version of documents and settings which is why when you choose the other version of xp to boot into you have a different desktop. What jeruvy has said above is the best option that way you will have a clean install and no boot menu, i just thought i would add this post just in case it happens again or any other user comes accross the same problem.

You probably would be better off with totally fresh start - but you would have to backup all your critical files etc first - off the drive.

However if you can provide a little more information - clearly - it may very possible to guide you in how to remove the XP installation you do NOT want, and preserve the rest of the installation as is?

But before you do anything at all, perhaps locate, copy, and post the boot.ini file here; the boot.ini is on the c: drive.

Also post exact details of the drive's partitions. In other words when you look at the system via MyComputer, do you see one 'drive (called c: ) or do you see perhaps a second one (d: ); and obviously a CDROM and/or a DVD etc? Hard-drive(s) are usually indicated by an icon that resembes a small grey flat box (or drive holder); CD/DVD etc include an extra item a CD/DVD disk image as part of the small flat box...

If you're not sure what I'm asking for, can you find someone "locally" to help you find/post the requested info?

I put the windows xp cd in and booted it from the cd but i only had options as install xp, quit the set up and repair a current os. So i had no idea where to go. I tryed to run "msconfig" but it never gave me a opition to delete the new xp. So im still struggling to find a cure, i know your information is correct im just very inexperienced :(

A little more info and it should be reasonably straightforward to resolve it all.

Also do you have jut one physical hard-drive? This is very likely.

Remember the boot.ini is on the Primary partition (c: ).
